After leaving the beautiful island of Vis that you can seen here and here, we rented a car in the city of Split and drove up the coast to our next destination – a small agriturismo in the Croatian countryside. For those who aren’t familiar, an “agriturismo,” is a bed and breakfast type hotel/resort located on a farm, and often has the freshest food.
The small bed and breakfast called Agrotourism Kalpic, was conveniently located only a 10-minute drive from the Krka National Park so since we knew that this was another must-see on our list, it was the perfect option for our stay.
On our first full day here, we decided to venture out to Krka National Park to see the waterfalls. Although, this isn’t the biggest national park or the biggest waterfalls in Croatia, they are the only ones that you’re allowed to swim in, and who wouldn’t want to say that they’ve swam in a waterfall in their life?
We were lucky that it was a warm, sunny day when we visited, since the water around the falls is absolutely freezing. Despite the temperature, it was such a great experience, and something I highly recommend if you ever find yourself in Croatia. We had a great time swimming around and snapping photos with the waterproof camera gear.
One thing I do recommend if you’re planning to go to Krka is that you leave on the earlier side. By the time mid-day rolls around there are buses upon buses of people arriving for tours so the park gets extremely crowded very quickly.
Since we knew that we were only really interested in seeing the falls and swimming a bit, we decided to pass on a tour guide. This ended up being a great decision as this cut our time at the park in half, and left us time to explore the small towns nearby. I also highly recommend bringing a pair of water shoes since it is a bit rocky and slippery when you’re getting in the water around the falls. I know that I fell a few times even with my water shoes on.
These pictures still get me every time – I mean does this even look real?
Let me know if you have any questions about our Croatia trip! Would love to give any restaurant or sight seeing recommendations that you may be interested in!

Hello, we are going to be traveling to Croatia in a weeks time. I found your post very informative. We will be visiting the Krka national park. Is it safe for small children to swim in? From your posts it looks like it is very rocky and slippery? We are also going to be in Split for a day. Would like recommendations on where to eat and what to see or do? Thanks!!
Hi Prachi,
I apologize for the delay! I think the falls would be fine for children to swim in with an adult’s assistance. As there are quite a few slippery rocks, I highly recommend the water shoes! Also, there are SO many great things to do in Split! We stayed there for a few days and had the best time. We went on a Game of Thrones tour while we were there, which you can book through Splitlicious. It takes you through Diocletian’s palace and to the Fortress of Kliss, which is about 20 minutes outside of the city.
As for food, I highly recommend eating at Villa Spiza – it was a bit hard to find but the food was absolutely amazing and by far the best meal that we had while we were there! Plus, they let you sip on wine outside while you wait for your table to be ready!
Hello!
Where in Krka National Park were you able to swim in (specifically, where did you go in the above photos)? My two girlfriends and I are doing a summer Euro trip and spending 6 days in Croatia, hoping to see Zadar, Krka National Park, Plitvice, and maybe Split. Thank you!
Hi Rachelle! Towards the very end of the park there is a roped off area which shows where you can swim. It’s the very last set of waterfalls before you cross the bridge into the area where the tour first begins. If you’re planning to swim, I recommend bringing a set of water shoes, as it is very rocky!
I also highly recommend visiting both Zadar and Split! We spent a day in Zadar and had a great time! You can view my post on it here, which will give you more information on what we did. As for Split, we spent 3 days there and had a great time! If you need any recommendations for where to eat or what to do, I’m happy to help!
Hope you have a great time on our trip!
Hi! I have a trip planned this August and one of our ports is Zadar, and this park is an option to visit. Would love to hear more about your experience there and any other tips you have. Did you happen to visit Zadar on your trip?
That’s so exciting! I highly recommend visiting Krka if you can! It’s a beautiful park, and such a great experience to be able to swim close to the waterfalls. The park was 110 kunas (around $16) per person to walk through. You can always choose the other option that allows you to walk through the park and ride on a boat to the monastery, but this option is a bit more expensive. Also, if you’re in need of a place to stay, I highly recommend staying at the Agrotourism Kalpic, which is only a 10 minute car ride away. It’s a beautiful bed & breakfast, with amazing owners, who serve home cooked meals that you can purchase for an extra price. We ate very well while we were there!
As for Zadar, we headed there right after our time at Krka and I wrote all about our day there in this post, but let me know if you have any specific questions about the city and I’d love to help 🙂 One thing that I definitely recommend seeing while you’re there is the Sea Organ on the city’s coast.
Hope all of this helps, and I’d love to hear all about your trip when you return!
