Sweater: Lou & Grey, Jeans: Target, Sunnies: Ray-Ban, Shoes: Nine West (old, similar styles here, here & here)

I like to think of distressed boyfriend jeans as an acquired taste – the more you wear them, the more you like them. But, what made the transition from skinny jeans so hard for me was figuring out the right way to style this new style of denim.

Over time, I’ve found that the key to styling boyfriend jeans is finding the right balance. Since these jeans are so loose fitting, pairing them with a top that’s equally as loose can often times make you look larger and can give the outfit an overall frumpy feel. So, first I like to try the jeans on by themselves and think about a few things – how do they fit? Where do they fit the loosest on your body, and is this something that you want to hide or accentuate in your look? What’s your favorite part of the jeans?

With these, I know they’re a little loose in my waist and also a little below the waist, but I decided that I was ok with the way they made my body look in that area, so I was fine with pairing it with a shorter sweater. If you want to hide this area a bit, try pairing them with a longer top. It’s all about being comfortable, and finding what makes you feel the most confident!

Now, for the shoes – the fun thing about boyfriend jeans is they look great with just about any pair – sandals? Yes. Flats? Yes. Heels? DUH. You really can’t go wrong here . I personally love the way distressed boyfriend jeans look with a pair of lace-up heels. It’s the perfect contrast between edgy and feminine, and I love everything about it. If you’re wearing a longer top, maybe try a pair of heels to help elongate your figure. Pairing them with flats? Try a tighter fitting top or t-shirt to balance out the look.

Most importantly, have fun with it! No one ever found a great outfit by playing it safe.
