A few weekends ago, with the help of Maven car share service and a few tips from the Thrillist day-trip guide, Zach and I headed upstate for the day to visit the Storm King Art Center.
If you’re not familiar with it, it’s a large 500-acre sculpture park located about an hour and a half outside of New York City in the Hudson Valley. Unfortunately there are no MetroNorth trains near the park, so the only way to get there is via car.
We arrived at the park around 12 p.m. on a hot Saturday in July and it surprisingly wasn’t nearly as crowded as I thought it would be. We paid $18 per ticket for admission, parked our car and set out for the bike rental spot, since we felt that it might be better than walking in the heat. Unfortunately, we learned that the bikes were $12 per person, per hour, which we thought was a bit pricey. On top of that, we would have to wait around a half hour for two bikes to even come back for us to use. In the end, we decided to just take our time walking through the park, rather than spend the money on the bikes.
One thing that I will say – don’t forget your walking shoes! I wore a pair of flat sandals and definitely regretted it by the end of the day. While there are pavements that you can walk on, there are quite a bit of sculptures located throughout the grassy areas and some even tucked away in the woods, so closed-toed shoes are highly recommended.
After about a half hour, due to the heat, I needed to recharge and refresh, so we headed to the outdoor cafe on the grounds. One thing that we did find was that they serve beer there and you can actually walk around the grounds with it, as long as it’s in a plastic cup. We both decided to get a Flower Power India Pale Ale and enjoyed our leisurely stroll through the rest of the park.
There were so many amazing things to see – metal sculptures, manmade grassy hills, wooden figures and more. It was truly a sight to see all of these set against the beautiful backdrop of the Hudson Valley.
Overall, it took us around 2 hours to walk through the park and we didn’t even see everything that was there, given the heat was getting the best of us. We will definitely be heading back once the fall comes and this time, I’ll be wearing the right shoes! 🙂
If you’re looking for a mini day trip from the city, I highly recommend checking this place out. It will be a great dose of culture and some much-needed fresh air.
