Tucked away in the woods of Greenville, New York, The Woodhouse Lodge is a magical hidden escape surrounded by the rolling hills of the Catskill Mountains. Owned by an artistic husband and wife duo, this design-centric 10-room lodge has the unique ability to make you feel instantly at home.
In addition to the impressive A-frame main building, the hotel also offers an on-site restaurant and bar whipping up fresh homemade meals and cocktails, and some pretty tasty natural wines, which you can enjoy in their outdoor dining area or right outside of your room.
But what really makes this place special is the ambiance as the sun starts to set and each fire pit on the grounds is lit for the night. The smoke fills the cool upstate air and that’s when you know it’s time to take out the s’mores; but don’t worry about bringing your own, they’ve got you covered.
While you could spend all weekend lounging on The Woodhouse grounds, what makes this such a great getaway spot is its proximity to a number of activities; hiking trails, local swimming holes, restaurants and bars, and even an old school drive-in movie theater. A few that I recommend are:
Activities:
- Huyck Preserve – The Myosotis Lake trail is a tranquil lakeside trail leading into the beautiful Rensselaerville Falls. This relatively easy hike to the upper falls and back only took about an hour and a half and offered some pretty impressive views, with the perfect place to dip your feet in at the end.
- Catskill Creek – A 46 mile river running through Greenville, NY, this waterway offers a number of local swimming holes scattered throughout the riverside, so be sure to come prepared with your bathing suit!
Restaurants:
- Gracie’s Luncheonette – Located about 20 minutes from The Woodhouse Lodge, Gracie’s serves up some pretty tasty classics (to-go for now). I recommend their fried chicken sandwich!
In the unprecedented times that we’re living in now, The Woodhouse Lodge does a great job of making guests feel safe with contactless check-in, check out and payments, easy social distancing with their outdoor lounge setups and contactless food and beverage delivery. This was my first getaway since the pandemic started and not once did I worry that I was putting myself at risk.
So, if you’re looking to escape the compactness of the city and enjoy the great outdoors, or are simply are just looking for a good place to relax, The Woodhouse Lodge is just the ticket.
