Blue Caves, Croatia

When booking our trip to Croatia, we scoured TripAdvisor to make sure that we were seeing anything and everything that we could. From our searches, we found that a lot of people recommended visiting the Blue Cave of Bisevo, which just happened to be a short boat ride from the town of Komiza where we stayed.

Many people had specifically recommended the Ames Trips from Komiza, which was a full day trip, with lunch on board, drinks and of course tours of the many caves in Croatia (not just the one that we went to). Unfortunately, the weather was a bit windy while we were in Komiza, so we weren’t able to go on the full day tour. Instead we opted to take a shorter tour right to the Blue Caves since we only had a few hours before we were headed to our next destination: Split!

We boarded a boat in Komiza, and rode about a half an hour to another island, where we then got on a smaller boat that took us right to the Blue Caves. Once we got there, we saw exactly why you weren’t able to go if the weather is windy. Everyone on the boat had to duck down to the bottom, while the driver waited for the tide to exit the cave, giving the boat just enough room to enter. The opening of the cave was so small that the there was no way the boat could enter while the tide was in the cave.

Following the tour, we were dropped off at the island where the caves are located and explored a bit before our boat came to take us back to Komiza.

If you ever find yourself in Croatia, I highly recommend you take a trip here. The cave was beautiful, and was completely natural. Depending on the time of day, the sunlight reflects off of the water and creates a beautiful aquamarine light. The pictures in this post don’t do it justice, so I highly recommend seeing it in person.

This is just another example of the natural beauty of this country.
